Your Curly Hair Colour Guide: Everything You Need to Know
Written by Tiffany Hall · Colour Specialist & Certified Trichologist · 5 min read
There's a myth in the hair world that curly hair can't be coloured. It can, including bleached, as long as it's done by specialists who understand curls. At Thriv, that means protecting the integrity of the curl and cuticle throughout, using vegan colour, and never compromising condition to get a colour result faster. Here's how to colour curly hair the right way.
Can curly hair really be coloured?
Yes. The key is protecting the curl and cuticle throughout the process. As a colour specialist salon, we'll always compromise condition over colour, never the other way around. That means if your hair isn't ready to achieve the look you want straight away, we'll be upfront about that and take you on a journey to get there safely.
For some clients that means a gentler tint that lifts gradually, rather than going straight in with bleach. For others it means prepping the hair first, especially if there's previous colour or box dye already on the strands. Managing expectations, and using professional-range products at home afterwards, is what protects both the colour and the curl pattern long term.
Colour doesn't always mean lightening
Not all curly hair colour needs to be lightened. Some colour can be tint-based, which is gentler again, or it might just be about changing tone, or helping give the hair more shine.
Why we use Davines bleach
When we do lighten curly hair, we use Davines lightener, a salon-grade system built around a Hair Protective Booster made of maleic acid and lipoic acid. It protects the hair's natural keratin structure, minimises damage during lifting, and helps preserve curl pattern and cuticle integrity. For curly hair, where curl definition is everything, that protection isn't a nice-to-have, it's essential.
Vegan, sustainable colour
Every colour service at Thriv uses Davines and YUV, both vegan-certified colour lines. It's part of a wider approach to doing colour more responsibly, from refillable colour cartridges that cut down on packaging waste to our partnership with Full Circle Salon Recycling, so offcuts and salon waste don't go to landfill.
Why a consultation is non-negotiable
Before we pick up a colour brush, every curly colour client comes in for a consultation. It's how we make sure you leave with a result you're actually happy with. Consultations are £30, which comes off the cost of your service if you book with us.
Your vision. Colour is surprisingly hard to describe. What looks "caramel" to one person can read as "honey" or "toffee" to a colourist, so we'll always talk through your vision and, if you have them, look at inspiration photos together. They help us understand what you want, just as importantly what you don't, and match tone to your natural undertones.
A skin test. We patch test every client at consultation, ahead of your appointment day.
A strand test, if needed. We may take a small strand of hair to see how it lifts. It gives us an accurate read on the likely result and helps set realistic expectations.
The journey. Depending on your hair's current colour, type, and density, we'll be honest about timing. Sometimes it's one appointment. Sometimes it's a few sessions, spaced out to protect your curls and get the healthiest result.
Colour is led by our co-founder Tiffany Hall, colour specialist and certified trichologist, so scalp and hair health are always part of the conversation, not an afterthought.
Is it the right time for you to colour?
Sometimes the honest answer is not yet. If your hair already has a lot going on, previous colour, home dye build-up, or compromised condition, jumping straight into bleach could damage the curl pattern permanently. In that case we might suggest a period of conditioning/strengthening treatments first, starting with a gentler tint that lifts gradually, or waiting until previous colour has grown out. We'd always rather have that conversation upfront than compromise the health of your curls.
