What is a Japanese Head Spa? What actually happens during ours (And when to skip it)

5 min read By Thriv Salon

"The short version: it's a hair and scalp treatment shaped by real trichology expertise, not a one-size-fits-all pamper session."

A Japanese Head Spa gets talked about as a treat. At Thriv, it's built on something more specific: a full hair and scalp experience curated by our co-founder Tiffany Hall, a certified trichologist, and shaped by real trichology expertise rather than a one-size-fits-all routine.

The Treatment

What actually happens

Eight stages, tailored to your scalp from the first consultation.

  1. Scalp consultation - So we understand what's going on before choosing products.

  2. Detox mask or purifying gel - Chosen based on your scalp type.

  3. Sensory scalp massage - Specialised tools to boost circulation and deepen relaxation.

  4. Nourishing hair mask

  5. Herbal hair rinse - Real herbs, mixed to Tiffany's trichology expertise.

  6. Bespoke shampoo treatment - Matched to your scalp's needs.

  7. Neck & arm massage - Including fascia stretching through the neck and shoulders.

  8. Waterfall rinse - Plus herbal hair tea and steam mist.

This treatment can be added to almost any in-salon service (tints are the one exception), or booked as a standalone.

Product

What we use and why it matters

We use Davines as our core scalp health range because how a product is formulated affects how a scalp condition behaves, not just how hair looks afterwards. For scalp conditions that Davines isn't the right fit for, we bring in Dakmatter, a Swedish, organic-certified, vegan scalp care brand built specifically around common issues like flaking, itch, dryness and sensitivity. Their formulas are concentrated and designed to target the root cause rather than mask symptoms. Choosing between them isn't guesswork, it comes down to a certified trichologist's assessment.

The trichologist

When a head spa isn't the right call

Mid-flare-up with an active psoriasis flare, severe dermatitis, or anything similarly acute? Some products and massage techniques can aggravate an already inflamed scalp.

Book a trichology consultation with Tiffany instead, she'll diagnose what's happening and get you onto the right plan first.

Extend it

Built it into a full reset

Delivered by our trained holistic therapist, add any of these to your visit - Reflexology, Swedish massage, Indian head massage, Holistic facial, Hot & cold stone massage.

Book online or speak to the team when you book to build a longer wellness appointment around your head spa.
